The Vovinam Belt System
The Vovinam Belt and Ranking system is relatively different from many of the other styles. For example, although we had adopted the black belt for some time, in Vovinam Australia today it is no longer worn. To present a deeper understanding of the way our disciples make their way up the Vovinam hierarchy, a table of belts with their meanings is displayed below.
Self Defense / Beginner Belts | Colour: Blue
Meaning: The hope and future of martial arts is as infinite as the (blue) sky.
Description: Everyone begins with the light blue belt and begins their Vovinam journey in the self defense class. From there if aged under 13 years old, passing of their first grading will attain them the blue belt. For those 13 years and older, with a slightly more advanced training program, they can go straight to blue belt I stripe after passing their first grading.
Instructor Belts | Colour: Yellow
Meaning: The understanding of martial arts has been aborbed into the (yellow) skin
Description: The instructor belt is earned when a Vovinam practitioner has enough experience and knowledge of Vovinam to begin helping and instructing the students with the beginner belts. With each red stripe that an instructor earns, they become much closer to becoming a master.
Master Belts | Colour: Red
Meaning: The understanding of martial arts has been aborbed into the (red) blood
Description: As a Master of Vovinam, it is a requirement to be both skillful in the techniques of Vovinam as well as the philosophies of Viet Vo Dao. It is also at this stage where the practitioner contributes their own theories of martial arts for the benefit of future generations of Vovinam.
Senior Master Belts | Colour: Red / White
Meaning: purity, and the understanding of martial arts has been slowly aborbed to the (white) bone
Description: Only the few and the great reach this level of mastery in Vovinam. Having the ability to grade future masters up, as well as contributing greatly to Vovinam and the outside community, masters of this level are held in high regard for their knowledge, experience and wisdom.
