What is Viet Vo Dao?
A disciple of Vovinam will follow two paths when training and learning in Vovinam as a martial arts. The first path is described by the term “Viet Vo Thuat” which refers to the techniques of Vietnamese martial arts. The second path is described by the term “Viet Vo Dao” which refers to the philosophy and ethics side of Vietnamese martial arts.
A common analogy used is that Vovinam is the root, whereas Viet Vo Dao is the fruit that has come from years of development.

The Vovinam Salute/Bow
A disciple of Vovinam in uniform will put their right hand over their heart and bow when they meet their masters, instructors, elders and peers. This is a symbol of the students high regard for respect and friendship.
The right hand is a symbol of a steel hand, and the heart is a symbol of a kind and benelovent heart. Having the steel hand over the benelovent heart declares a pledge to combine courage, benevolence, technique and philosophy.
